Hello all. I am only a few months into linux as a whole, and I have learned enough to know that I know nothing :-)

I have finally settled on Ubuntu w/ LXDE because it's fast and does everything that I need.

I wanted to find a "10 foot" version so that I could connect to my TV and use my pc like a media center. When I came upon myth-tv I thought that would be the answer I was looking for. First I tried installing from synaptic, and I have it on the machine, but I couldn't configure the whole front end / back end thing correctly.

(I think I understand the premise... there has to be a location for the recordings and such [back end] and there has to be a location for the gui and software to run [front end])

Yet after two days of trying I couldn't get it to work. I was going to quit, then I decided to d/l the mythbuntu live cd. The instruction manual (which by the way only shows you that there are options, but doesn't explain what to do with those options) said that was the easiest way to go. I didn't do the install because I figured that I should try to make it work first. Same issues... I get to the solid blue screen that asks for the user id, location, password, etc... (the second page asks for an alternate id for the front end if needed, etc...) and I can't connect to whatever it is that I am supposed to be connecting to. I did the nano /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt thing (under root because that's the ony way to view/edit it) and put that information in and it didn't work either.

I'm sure that I am missing something obvious, but since the instructions aren't at a kindergarten level ;) then I have no idea what that is.

If someone has the time and patience to help then I would appreciate it. I have tried to look for help here and other places. All the answers pretty much say the same things... I think it was said in greek. (maybe it's just me... I tried to get xbmc to work and I couldn't get it to do anything either)

Thanks in advance for your help. I need it
