Before installation, BIOS setup utility was re-configured as follows:
-Under Advance, Installed OS setting changed from PNP O/S to Others
-Under Advance, Large Disk Area Mode setting changed from DOS to Others
-Under Boot, after installation boot setting was changed from CD drive to Hardisk

I successfully installed Ubuntu 8.0.4 in the pc but on startup get reading " GRUB Loading Stage1.5" with blinking cursor below, nothing else.

Any advise how to boot O/S properly?

You can repair the stage 1.5 problems by using the SuperGrubDisk -- which you have to download and burn.

Thanks. However, I am in trying to promote Ubuntu in my department and I want to prove that the standard Ubuntu installation cd is enough for installation of the O/S.

There is a possibility that the hard disk has bad sectors as the pc is getting old.
