I work for a local company. I sort out there website daily, I understand php and how mysql works and I have managed to get the company on page one of Google which in return is getting so much extra business. Not only that but I have also sorted out there network and fixed a few computers whilst I have been there.
I can also use Photoshop, Dreamweaver MX and have been building websites for the last 4 years.
I am honestly thinking of jacking this in, because they are taking the **** and I dont honestly think they know how much it would cost to bring another person in.
How much should I be paid for this? I am currently earning 6.00ph GBP

depending on how good you are, i'm sure you can charge between 40-70 USD per hour as a web developer...not sure how the charges would be for graphic related work though

I put together this website together for someone. Php and mysql. I am not a programmer however I understand how php scripts work and can basically put together a database driven website without any help.
Visit www.click-4-sun.co.uk for an example of my work.

Web developers, programmers, etc... are a dime a dozen. In Canada, I can tell you that 40-70/hour is WAY overblown. In Canada you can probably expect about half that amount. There is no way any company anywhere in Canada is going to pay a generic web developer or programmer 40-70/hour just off the bat. Maybe if you have 15 years of experience and have worked on the NASA space station they might. Go and talk to a headhunter and ask them what your market value is in your area.

my company pays our web devs 30 dollars(US) an hour for most projects. This includes PHP, SQL and HTML/CSS as well as graphic design when needed on the most part our deadlines are very short though so we are expected to finish projects very quickly

Well - I usually calculate with 30 Euros an hour, yet I am a not complety finished computer science student, so depending on the work you may take a little more.

Hmm, if you would work for me then I'd pay you aprox. 24.50e/h. I have my own busines with a friend of mine. Basicly we make homepages and help-out small busineses with their web-needs. That's about it. Nothing fancy or ultracool, just basic webcoding and developing pretty "basic" homepages and services.
My main daytime activity still is studying though, and I'm not gonna give up on it anytime soon. I'm trying to get rid of these computers around me, and hopefully after I graduate, I'll be teaching theatre, drama and literature for the rest of my working life :)

Where I live, it's not even legal to pay someone less than ~$7.00 per hour. Up in my little corner of the US, that'll buy someone a hot lunch.

heh...min wage here across the sea in Ireland is €7.60 an hour, but it's all relative as the cost of living is high. but I'm on a GOOD wage of about €10.00 p/h as a truck driver. Thats right, i'm a total linux geek who can build a computer with his eyes shut, but would never actually work in IT unless it was my own business. So, I drive trucks for a living and earn about €30,000 a year. Truck drivers are being paid ever higher wages due to massive skills shortage in the industry. A good petrol tanker driver can expect c.€70,000 per year, as it's a high risk job. We cannot get good insurance though, as HGV drivers are now listed right below firemen for riskiest jobs to do.

oh sorry, i should have mentioned that when i said Web Development, i meant even creating Content Management Systems from scratch sometimes.

but do you let on to your clients that you live in Brazil? i live in Sri Lanka which is south of India and it's a third world country as well. the scope for a web developer such as myself is terrible so i get most of my clients online but i never tell them where i live unless i have to (in the case of payment by bank cheque) and they don't ask. after all, it's none of their business in most cases.

actually, i'm working on a project for a canadian client at the moment and he's paying me at the rate i mentioned. and i've only been using PHP for the pasty...2-3 years but i have worked with C++ a lot as a kid but this project is just PHP+MySQL+XHTML+CSS and i have no college degree whatsoever.
it involves adding components to their existing CMS system (postnuke).
i'm pretty sure if you find the right client and you can prove your worth and you're an exceptionally good developer, you can work your way upto 100USD per hour because i know a Florida based programmer who's one of the best i have ever come accross and he charges more than 100USD per hour

A company will only ever pay what it can get away with.... £6 ph is still 12k p.a.
If your company had hired a consultant they might have paid $50 per hour or more but they didn't... I know its tough but you are worth as little as they can get away with to them and not a penny more.
I once had a meeting with a SW vendor who had been overcharging my predecessor for years by doubling some of the support and maintainance costs across products .(not to mention dropping decimal places on currency conversions etc.) . I spent a lot of time researching and going back through the finance dept's files and walked out of the meeting saving 50 million NOK for my company .. about 3 million pounds at the time ... not to mention countless all-nighters and various other stuff ...
When my company made me redundant later on they refused to even pay for my return flight to the UK which I was contractually entitled to or shipping back my personal effects ... knowing ot would cost me more to get a solicitor to actually do something about it.
In the end you are worth less than nothing to your company. You are a liability... they might get rid of you and replace you with someone who has already been on a training course you ask to go on just to save the cost of training ...
I never beleived this when my friend got made redundant after 17 yrs with the same company and warned me... but .. he was right.
You shouldn't talk of jacking it in you should talk of finding a better job where your skills are more appreciated. You can look for extra-curricular work and stuff as well even better if you can do it in work (Dilbert style)
If you lack time to work after work then take your personal stuff into work and spend your breaks doing it (and worktime too if you can) ...
I once heard of a consultant who got fired after it was found out he had three jobs in the same building at Canary Wharf ... :D seriously though the guy had pulled it off for several years or something...so you can work exactly the hours they pay you for and then go and do another job...
If you like the company try and get more training etc. from them, for every extra penny they pay you it costs them 1.6p or something whereas every penny on training only vcosts em 0.8p after deductions!
Your company might not appreciate your type of talent
So use your time looking for something better ...
