Everybody seems to be saying how great Windows 7 is (or is going to be) compared to Vista/XP.
My main question is will you purchase it?
I hadn't planned on getting Vista but I let the shinny newness get the best of me. :( I personally do not think Vista is that terrible although many others will disagree with me.

You did search for other Windows 7 threads before posting this one, didn't you?

hmmm... Im not really going to be buying something that is descried as: sucking less than vista, and the only really good thing about 7 is the theme.
It's not going to be bringing anything really new to the table so... not impressed, they had years of planning and the only thing going to be selling it is predicted to be the fact is will probably come preinstalled on computers. hurray.

I guess the main thing I wonder is how do we know that 7 isn't just Vista with UI chagnes? I mean it is not like anyone is allowed to see the OS code right?

I will not purchase it.
I'll be using the RC for some time to come.
Before too long, they will put Windows 7 up onto the MSDN Academic Alliance and I'll get a copy for free. ;)

I wonder if there will still be updates for the RC after the official version is released?

why would there be?

why would there be?
Because the RC lasts a year(can't remember) after the official release.
If there's no updates, what's the point of the previous statement?:P

why would they release updates for an RC if the final is out?

The RC will be good for another six months after the final version is released. This is to give people enough time to make the switch to the final version. Think of it as a grace period.
If Microsoft was to offer updates for the RC after the final version was released, then people wouldn't want to make the switch to the final version and Microsoft wouldn't make money off of their new product.

Thanks:) I'll be expecting shutdown every two hours in the future of this RC.

I wont purchase windows 7 . I dont find any reason for wasting my money. Perapplication sound control and increased security are the features that impress me . Since Iam using intel core2 there may be performance improvement. But the money to be paid for it is high compared to what iam getting. Widgets and visual affects are much better in KDE than 7's

It's not a bad idea to have important updates for a release candidate if a great many people are going to use it. By giving it away for free, Microsoft have ensured that the number of people using the RC is going to be huge, even after the final version is available for purchase. I mean, their official stance will be, "If you want the safe and non-buggy version, then you have to pay for it." Which is fair enough, but if important security and usability updates aren't backported, then a lot of "try before you buy"-type folks aren't going to be very impressed, and that might just influence their decision whether or not to buy. I think Microsoft would do well to make sure the RC remains the best it can possibly be right up to the shut-off date. It won't lose them any money in the long-run because sooner or later everybody will have to upgrade. It could just win them some more customers.

It hurts to say, but I think Windows 7 is pretty fantastic. I'm using it instead of Ubuntu on my main lappy. I really like the task bar and "Aero peek." And it seems that the eye candy is not gobbling resources. The beta version of Live Movie Maker imports my HD .MOV files without having to re-encode them. I also like that imgburn or whatever it's called is included. I say all of this knowing that when I get my first virus I will wipe the machine and put Ubuntu back on it. In my house the tally goes like this. Ubuntu on 2 machines, Windows 7 on 1 and XP on 1.

For those of you planning on using Win 7 rc until it expires remember this:
We all know the RC will expire on June 1,2010 and it has been notified to the few who have dared to install the RC, like me. But Microsoft has just come out and said that from March 1, 2010 onwards the PC which has Windows 7 RC installed will start shutting down every 2 hours just to let you know that its time to get the licensed copy
And on that note, I'm moving this to recurring discussions.

I'll stick with XP to continue playing games until they are ported to Linux. Fingers crossed with Steam being ported to Linux (it is sounding very hopeful).
I don't think I will ever purchase another Microsoft product for use for myself. I've had enough problems with my legal copy of Windows XP for me to feel the need to pay for any of their licenses.
I plan to never use a Microsoft product for my personal use as soon as possible.

I probably will buy Windows 7. I am excited for Diablo3 and Starcraft 2. Both of which I am sure will run in Wine, but I have had a chance to run the beta and just installed the RC. I think Windows 7 will work fairly well.

I will buy it! I'm sure of it!
Oh wait.. I just heard that it's closed source and it costs 100 USD! Nah, I'll stick with win XP for gaming.
or.. I could fire up Transmission xD

I would never pay for any Windows. Only way I get them if for free like I got Vista, XP and Windows 2000.
Or if I buy a PC with it on it.
I prefer Linux personally. It just works better for me. Thats not to say its better for everyone. I can only speak for myself.

I don't think I could ever put up with paying anything for something that has built in artificial restrictions for the users in order to protect itself, the parent company and their various sponsors. Absolutely rediculous.
I would consider using it if I was paid to do so.

I will purchase Mandriva Power Pack instead. Oh wait... Mandriva costs 59 Euros. Vista Home Premium costs 219 Euros (by downloading it at Microsoft)...
maybe I will buy 4 Mandriva Power Packs for this money... or maybe 2 Mandriva's and 2 open Suse... or maybe 1 Mandriva, 1 open Suse and one Red Hat Enterprise Linux (all cost around 60 Euros) and save the rest of the money? ;) :D
