View Full Version : A proposition, an emulation section

It seems recently (and quite often if you count WINE... it's not really an emulator as it's name shows...) there seems to be interest in running other systems in Ubuntu via emulation.
There are some emulators packaged with Ubuntu, and interpreters too (i.e. scummvm).
Anyway, just bringing it up, also it doesn't have to merely include games and apps.
There is the matter of sound emulation (Ubuntu provides plenty for sid), I'd like to see something like uade included too (plays over 150 amiga formats)
You can learn about it at http://freshmeat.net/projects/uade/
GPL of course.
Please vote on the poll. Thanks.

i dont think emulators need their own forum, people just need to search. i dont think ive seen a new problem posted about wine, ever.
then again im one of the people that has no need, and would refuse to install an emulator anyways. i still read the threads pretty often

Hate to tell you but Ubuntu comes with an emulator by default: xterm, it is a terminal emulator. =)
Anyway, searching is always good.
I admit to not knowing much about WINE posts, but if you search for WINE, you'll find posts spread all around...
A new section would keep some of the other forums a bit cleaner.

if you look at the spread around posts though, almost all of them are the same. if there was a way to force people to search, it would clear that up, but even within an emulator forum you will still have 3482 threads on how to install wine from source, even when there is (maybe there isnt) a HOWTO on the exact topic. a few days ago there were 3 wine threads on the first page of either gnome support or desktop support, and 2 of those 3 were essentially the same thing.
also, xterm doesnt count (just kidding. you do win, but i was talking strictly windows emulators in my post, though i didnt mention it)

All good man, I don't have WINE installed on my desktop either.
Anyway, I guess a sticky on those how-to's would be useful. I'm not sure a reminder to search would help (people seem to ignore those...)
Maybe with those wine/emu threads in one place (with "stickies" on the most common issues) it could streamline getting help before even having to search.
How about the forum mods? Any specific issues?

I agree an emulation section would be good, so that the games section can be freed up for torunements and bragging etc. Emulation convos are frequent and currently happen in games mostly, they tend to center around wine, dosbox and zsnes. While two of those are obviously games related wine is used for many other applications, i my self only use it for work since i need to test things in IE without getting my pc infected with the XP cancer.
I would love to see an emulation section, pref with some howto's and people who knew what they are talking about, while searching works its in-effecicent for such a broad topic.
