I have a dell inspiron 1520 and I dual booted ubuntu about a week and a half ago, with out any knowledge of ubuntu when i decided to do it. My instillation went fine, shrinking my OS: partion, along with the other 2 partitons along side it no worrys, but the only problem i have is audio with the volume buttons at the front of my laptop have like 3 settings Press - once volume goes down, press - again volume goes super low press - again mutes, and vise versa, as to vista where you have to press - many times before it mutes as it gradually changes volume. Other than that ive had no problems.

anyways
Today is my first time on the forums, and i see this section specifically to dell computers and ubuntu. Is there something wrong with dells and ubuntu i dont know about? After all i was just like hey i want to dual boot ubuntu so i did.

Many laptops require small tweaks to get sound settings to work properly. Do a search for 'laptop sound', I am sure you will find a dozen different posts on the issue.

Try giving this thread a lookover: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130384

It details setup fairly well, and lists a few additional links for additional tweaking. The comments are also pretty relevant to potential problems.

I think the reason Dell has a separate forum is because a couple of years ago they decided to sell some computers with Ubuntu pre-installed. So kinda the opposite of Dells having unusual problems.

Many computers (especially laptops) of all brands will require some tweaking to get all the features working. I don't believe Dells are particularly better or worse in that regard.

I have a Vostro 200 and a Vostro 1400 laptop. Both have run Hardy, Intrepid and now Jaunty. Minor issues with Hardy, but after that it just gets better and better. I use the standard online upgrade each time as I find the Dell 'extras' on my Windows partitions less than helpful.

More of the same. I'm running 9.04 on an Inspiron E1505 and mini9 and experienced only the sound gotcha with fresh installations (separate partition {not formatted} for the /home files).

Plus, this forum is wonderful support.
