View Full Version : Pronouncing Linux...?

Having began trying different flavors of Linux in about '96 (Redhat, Mandrake, BSD, etc.) and doing this on my own without live people around to get feedback...I began to pronounce the word Linux, Line X and it has become a habit.
I now know that the "popular" or "correct" pronunciation is Lynne X but I am now stuck with the bad habit.
Am I too be shunned and excluded publicly because of this, as now more people know the correct pronunciation and I am being corrected constantly? Any suggestions?

Yeah, I've seen that before. I am watching Revolution OS right now, which includes many interviews with Linus.

Linnix and I really don't care what the "Official" way is. :P
It's like how Ubuntu is "oo-boon-too" and GIF is technically "jif". It just doesn't seem right, so I don't do it that way.

I am in pretty much the same situation as you (97 though, one year later, btw, BSD is _NOT_ a flavour of linux) and probably never actually heard another human being speak the word until the early part of this century (2001 maybe), so I've always pronounced it line-ix, as that sounds more like a merging of linus (the name linus is pronounced in Australia as line-us, not lin-nus) and unix to me. It's hard to get out of the habit, but I've had to, otherwise people assume you don't know what the OS is, let alone how to pronounce it properly.
lin-ucks just sounds too un-Unixy to me, Unix, Ultrix, Xenix etc. all have a similar sounding last syllable, so too should linux.

The best way to figure out is with a video:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1061159908534146317&ei=iAQaSrGIKpCkrgKo8qHCDw&q=linus+torvalds+linux+pronounce&client=firefox-a
Especially with Linus Trovalds speaking.

Again, watch the youtube video I posted in the second post of this thread.
It has Linus Torvalds himself saying it.
