It is a very cool game, but is afflicted by irregular releases. The next release should be awesome. It will use OGRE (http://www.ogre3d.org) so have much better graphics and reduce bugs (OGRE is well maintained). It will be completely rebalanced so gameplay should be more fun. Also many new graphics and ships have made it into CVS. VS 0.5 will be a premier league FOSS game.

Yes, also an elite, privateer etc. etc. clone.

Though if you look for a real elite clone, oolite is what you want.
