I have not seen this topic discussed here, although it may very well be present somewhere around here, but I have a link that anyone new to, or curious about linux may find invaluble.

http://www.linux.org/groups/

Why is this link so important ? In January 1997, I took my computer (not a laptop, but a full size homebuilt job ) down to the Infomart in Dallas Texas, to a monthly computer sale/ expo and had RedHat 4 installed by members of NTLUG LIP, the North Texas Linux Users Group's Linux Installation Project.

I joined NTLUG, and so began my Linux experience. Now, even after all this time, I still do not consider myself any where near being a Linux guru. And the command line still scares the hell out of me. But the fact that someone was there to help install Linux the first time, was enough to get me started. I had a stable version of RedHat 7.2 as my primary OS until I installed Ubuntu on it last year. I have tried many versions, but this is the first time I have replaced the RH 7.2 I had installed for so long.

Anyway, from what I understand, there are still MANY LUGs, Linux User Groups, out there doing installs. Still to this day, if you are in North Texas, you can get Linux installed for you at no charge, see this page

http://www.ntlug.org/cal.html

see the note about LIP in rm #139

And the link above will help you to find the user group in your area, anywhere in the world. If you do not have a linux user group in your area, maybe some of the experienced linux users can start a group. There is a User Group HowTO at the first link above, at the bottom of the page.

As far as that goes, there may be someone hanging around here that lives close enough to you, that would be willing to help you out. You never know.

One final note, Ubuntu Linux, is the most user friendly distro I have ever had the privelege of using. And more importantly, and with very few exceptions, the friendliest bunch of linux users anywhere.
