Keyboard and Mouse don't work at splash screen!

Maybe not the same problem but a similar one with me.

Dell Vostro 1710 laptop running jaunty.

Sometimes (not all the time but about 40 to 50 percent of the time) neither the keyboard nor the touchpad works on the login screen.

If I plug in a USB mouse the external mouse works, if I plug in a USB keyboard the external keyboard works. In any case the laptop keyboard and mouse don't work. If I remove the devices the the laptop keyboard and touchpad doesn't work.

Using the external mouse If I suspend the machine and then wake it up everything works properly.

Has this happened to anybody? Any clues as to what may be wrong?
