Sweet Sister Morphine

Sorry if this has been answered previously, but as much as I've searched, I can't seem to find a solution that fits.
I'm using an iRiver e100 with Jaunty (although I had the same problem with Intrepid). The system recognises the device and I can play music using Rythmbox, Banshee and pretty much every other media player I've tried.
The trouble is, I can't add or remove songs, edit tags or otherwise alter the files on the device either through media programs or the File Browser. Every time I try, I get an error message informing me that the iRiver is a "Read-only file system". The obvious solution of changing the permissions of the relevant file or folder in the "Properties" section of the File Browser simply results in the following message:
Sorry, could not change the permissions of "filename.mp3": Error setting permissions: Read-only file system
Can anybody help? I'm a bit new at this, so I'm probably going to need the "for dummies" version of any advice.
