I wanted to install openoffice.org on my PPC iMac. I have ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid. Currently there's no PPC version of openoffice for Linux. Is there a way to download the sources code and compile it? If I did this would I need to download Java Runtime Environment?

I know it might be time consuming to install openoffice.org from source but I'm interested in a challenge.

If I find other programs that don't have ppc installs does it usually work to build them from source or am I usually out of luck?

try abiword for word/doc's and gnumeric for spreadsheets.

what is the error you get when you try to install openoffice with synaptic?

Have you actually searched for it in the repos with apt-get or in Synaptic from a running installation, and have the appropriate repos enabled?

Sometimes PPC packages get left out of "official" documentation since we are now just a community-driven port.

I could have sworn it was there when I had Hardy and Jaunty on my G5 iMac.

I am however staring OO right in the face with Debian Lenny 5.0 for ppc.

It's all in the repos, no need to download and compile.

On a side note - for OSX users that find that there may be no recent PPC version of OO at openoffice.org, be sure to visit

In fact, you might even prefer it!
