I'm Linux system administrator since 2000 (Started with Linux somewhere in 1995), and I hold zero certificates so far. :)
I'm currently preparing for the first LPI exam, although it's not going so well with the preparations. :|

I spent 10 years as a Microsoft Sysadmin... and picked up a bunch of Microsoft ones... All the way up to MCSE Security in 2003... and a few of the CompTIA ones...
But quit caring about them once i started in on my Bioinformatics degree, where Linux and Programming skills seem more important... Looking at DB ones now... MySQL in particular... but wait to see if there is anymore fallout from whole Oracle/SUN fun and excitement...

I do have:
- A master's degree in Biology
- A master's degree in Biochemistry
And currently pursuing a PhD in Biology...

I'm hoping to get a Linux + certification. I also am getting a Cisco + cert. I would get others, but they do cost a lot.

This will "resurrect" the thread as well.
I now have my Security+ in addition to my A+ and Network+. Still planning to go for Linux+ though I don't know how soon.

I got my first help desk job with the A+ certificate and my degrees. I have 1 year degree in computer forensics and a 2 year in networking. After a year of picking up some shifts working with the IT guys I got my Network+, server+ and moved over to IT work full time. But ultimately I think they’re important if your prospective employer, technical staffing (http://www.gtssminds.com/what-we-do/it-staffing.htm) team or segment of the industry typically requires them to get in the door.
