As a science teacher and erstwhile researcher, many attractive little devices seem closed off to me, as a linux user. Recently the GNU/Linux desktop has been improving by leaps and bounds, but there are still those devices that I cannot use. And one cannot easily get even information about the availability and useability on GNU/Linux systems.
A few of the many pieces of interesting hardware that have been beyond my reach include
VideoFlex Microscope Camera
Other USB proprietary cameras and scopes
Some scanners
Vernier instrumentation for science classroom labs
The Mattel microscope is one that people have gotten to work. Other similar little microscope gadgets seem to be beyond the reach of my expertise (or lack thereof) so I don't even read further.
I have been searching for information about the Celestron 44300 HandHeld Digital Microscope, a USB device. What would I look for? How would I go about looking for information that would help me to know whether such a device would work through some generic USB driver? Or would it work under Virtual Box? How many would? Wine?
After having searched again for information on such a device, I'd like to ask if others have had success, or just where people would look for such information? Is there any group dedicated to getting these to work?
This is a major area that keeps GNU/Linux beyond the interest of many educators, I think.
