I had heard many great things about cube 2, and I was impressed with what I saw, so I wanted to get in on the action myself. However, I am still a beginner with linux (very much so), and Im not quite sure how to get everything to run properly. Anyways, I went about trying to get the program to run in the best way I know how, but when I click it to run, nothing seems to happen.

Im not certen if its a problem with the program, or a problem with how im approaching it, but Ive been able to get an aplication or two to run this way before.

Heres the basic rundown of what I did:
-I downloaded the files online
-Once they finished downloading, I got a copy of the folder, the Icon of which was a box (Which I can only assume is the linux equivilant of a zip file)
-I extracted the folder out of that file, and now have both on the desktop (Which are the ONLY things on the desktop, if that helps)
-I double-clicked on the Icon that looks like a file with a diamond in the middle that displays the visage of 2 gears, which I can only assume is the linux equavilent of an execuatble (it was called an executable-text-file)
-At this point, it gives me 4 options: Run in terminal(linux command prompt?), Display in text file, cancel, or run.
-Clicking just "run" does absolutely nothing.
-Clicking "run in terminal" has something pop up breifly, then dissappear, which I can only assume is the terminal
-Display in text file, as you probably know already, shows the start-up code, and the cancel button is obvious.

I wasnt quite sure weather to put this thread in this forum, or the absolute beginners section, but I figure the problem is a combination of my limited knowledge of the workings of linux, and a problem with the software, so my hope is that this way, I can not only get everything to run properly, but also gain a greater insight in the workings of linux.

And before you ask, Yes, I have looked for other sources, but they either had nothing that would help me, or wasnt in a form I could decipher, as, again, I am very new to the workings of linux.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah Sauerbraten folks have messed up things pretty badly here.

open a terminal and cd to your sauerbraten dir
launch ./bin_unix/linux_64_client (on a 64bit platform)
that should do it

I played it a few minutes and didn't think the gameplay was very interesting, however the Cube Engine looks really fine.

Actually, I was able to get it running, but thanks for the help.

My only problem is that the program seems to run at a studdery crawl, and freezes randomly, even though my Vista OS can handle much more demanding games with ease (Though im not saying one is better than the other). This seems to be the case for most of the programs I try to run in linux as opposed to vista, which confuses me. Its the same hardware, so how does the software make it run so slow? My laptop isnt great, I know, but it can do better than what its been doing.

Are you sure you have the correct graphics drivers ?

Yes, they run just when Im in vista. I even got wine to start up one of my emulators, and it ran at about half the speed.

Do I need to install a different driver for a different OS? If so, then how do I find out which one I need?

Yes you need different drivers for Vista and Linux
In the administration menu run the Hardware Drivers , it should let you know if you need some additionnal drivers.

Thanks for the info, but the only driver it gives me to install is the "Alternate atheros madwifi driver," but thats only for wifi problems, and mine runs just fine.

Ill try to see If I cant find a Linux version of the driver from the manufacturer's website. If this isnt a good idea, please let me know.
