Okay, I just recently made the switch from Windows (even the inability to play some of my favorite games won't make me go back lol) and though I'm not a huge gamer I am a fan of first person shooters, and I know there are some for Linux and I've been playing them some, but are there any that aren't tournament style games where you're fighting in an arena? The only one I know of is Aleph One but I had already beaten those games when they were for Mac lol

3.Warsow www.warsow.net

4.Alien Arena www.icculus.org/alienarena/rpa/aquire.html

That looks like a good list, I'll be sure to check it out when I get home. And Chemical Imbalance, those games do look good but I'm looking for "non-arena" FPS games, any other ideas?

Freedoom has an incomplete single player campaign. That's about it.

Cool, I'll check some of those out, any other ideas? I'm trying to get Wine to work with some games but I'm having issues, any suggested resources on getting Wine to work?

There's this place (http://appdb.winehq.org) and that forum (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=313).

Hm... Well maybe I'm just overlooking it but I see a lot of things like bug fixes etc, but I realy don't see anything like installation instructions on that website, I have looked in the past. Is there just something I'm overlooking?

To be honest, I'm not sure what you mean by "arena".

Does that mean online multiplayer or team against team?

I'm guessing you want a single player campaign style game?

Sauerbraten has a single player mode:
http://sauerbraten.org/

There's also Doom 3, Unreal Tournament, Medal of Honor, Half-Life (1 &2) etc...

I'm still not sure what arena means though :D

Arena as in Quake III Arena, Alien Arena or Open Arena I guess :D

Any shooters where you win by getting frags, or actualy shooters that count frags haha, I like games that are more plot-line and exploration oriented

Okay. Then I suggest Doom 3. It has a native linux client.

Half-Life and HL-2 play excellently with WINE.

There's also a native linux game called Cold War. Check it out.

There's also Prey that has a Linux client, and has a really good single player experience.

Cool thanks guys, last night I actually got a game working with WINE for the first time (even though I know it wouldn't work well) but yeah it was Crysis and it really is buggy haha, still, I'm sure if I got it to run on WINE I'm sure I could get others too also :P I'll be sure to checkout those games, thanks :)

I always check http://appdb.winehq.org/ to make sure the windows application runs at Gold or Platinum level in WINE.

I have Counterstrike Source and Team Fortress 2 working in WINE. I'm still messing with a few versions to see which works better for everything I have. From 1.1.15 to 1.1.21. Not sure yet but each has good and bad experiences depending on the game I'm playing.

Oblivion has problems with versions above 1.1.18 however CSS works better with the higher versions of WINE. So I have a WINE directory and may switch from one versionof WINE to another. Kinda a pain but I'm sure when they release their next stable version it will have a lot of goodness in there for us all. I see great things in their future.

Also I purchased PREY when I learned they have a native linux client available. The single player is pretty good and I'm also playing Quake 4.

For some reason though I keep going back to Counterstrike Source. I'm addicted to it I admit :-D

Funny enough, I got S.T.A.L.K.E.R (first one) running great through Wine without much work. :D

I'm not sure about Americas Army anymore. The newest version doesn't support a linux client. And of what I know it doesn't work with wine. Maybe there is a way to get it going, natively or through wine, but I don't know it. Although I would love too, it's a wicked game.

The version of AA for linux might be pretty old, but there are lots of people on the servers.
It's pretty fun, but a little too slow action-wise for my taste.

btw, I've been playing Half Life through WINE and it like runs perfectly lol, sometimes when I start up the game it'll like freeze like right after the game loads but if I just press escape for the menu than press it again it goes right back into the game just fine and doesn't freeze at all again :D It runs beautifuly

Return to Castle Wolfenstein runs natively. Deus Ex & Half Life both run brilliantly in Wine. Far Cry worked OK too when I tried it, but I don't think my computer was really up to it. Haven't done much new gaming for a few years, so my computer's a bit long in the tooth.

I wonder if StarCraft 2 will be supported under Wine. I'm hopeful since StarCraft 1 is very well supported. Hopefully they will be just as motivated :D

Well... Starcraft 1 does work great under Wine. My kids wanted me to buy a few more copies of the game so they could play it together. Now we have 4 copies and it's been a blast :D

I play starcraft on b.net with wine. Game is almost flawless, the only problems I have are I can't 'ping' the map and the b.net chat screens look messed up with a black background (though they're useable). War3, diablo2 & WoW run flawless (for me) so long as you run it with openGL rather then direct3D. Blizzard games generally run well due to not using directX as much as most others for osX compatibility.

Forgot about b.net. The starcraft gaming has been local games we play on our lan. Many hours of fun there.
