There's something funny. Previously I was able to enable extra visual effects for my laptop when I used ubuntu 8.10 but after I upgraded it to 9.04 I no longer can enable the extra visual effects nor normal visual effects.

I'm not a pro, but have you got drivers for your graphic card installed?
Usually, on the first run after installation, there is a notification saying that there are "proprietary drivers avaible" for your graphic card.
You can also check in the program called "Synaptic" (System>administration>Synaptic package manager) if the package "compiz" is installed.
By the way, have you upgraded to 9.04 or have you made a fresh and new install?
Hope I help somewhat :)

There are a few compiz installed. I made a fresh new installation because there was a problem upgrading it because a certain file couldn't be downloaded. What is Ispci?
