where do installations get saved, on casper-rw or freespace ?

Hi

I have made a 4GB USB live with Ubuntu 9.04.
It has 1GB casper-rw and close to 1.75GB left as free space.

I wanted to know what happens when I install Sun JDK and eclipse onto it ? More specifically, where do they get saved - on the freespace or casper-rw ? (I plan to install them in /usr/local/)

It probably gets saved to free space
