in a word: wow! This is amazing stuff... I now have a blue 3d-ish desktop with 3d-ish blue icons... my my...

remind me again: why was I using Windows?

PS. No offense intended to default ubuntu theme, I liked it too, but was jealous of the 3d-ish things people had

Did you check out both art.gnome.org and gnome-look.org? You should if you haven't.

You can also use the gnome-art (packaged with the same name in the repositories) interface to install themes from art.gnome.org .

Thank you all for sharing this. I had just kept using the brown defaults, but now I have Clearlooks as a theme. Great!

there is a grub splash image you might be interested to add to your site (couldn't find it) in gnome-looks.org... just search the site for "grub". name is grubuntu... image quality isn't toooo good, but still, friendly :P

If that impressed you, and you have a decently fast system, try "apt-get install 3ddesktop", then run "3ddesk"... Prepare to be amazed. :)

Check out http://desk3d.sourceforge.net/ for FAQ's, screenshots, and how to bind the 3ddesk command to a key shortcut. What I'd really like is the ability to middle-click on the desktop background and have it run.

Now, I only have to wait until Metacity/Gnome allows a different background per each workspace...
