I herd somewhere that some rich south afircan guy founded ubuntu and gave it a shed load of cash (hence free disks) is this true and do the founders of ubuntu use the forum. How connected are the community and management ?

Just wondering :)

LOL yes it is true Mark Shuttleworth founded the Shuttleworth Foundation (a charitable organization) as well as Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) and set up funds (investments, bonds, crap like that) for both of them to ensure their survival regardless of his own.
The forums aren't maintained by the official Ubuntu people but the devs do get on here once in a while.

Maybe earobinson was thinking the reference would help spread an understanding of how one could communicate thoughts and opinions directly to developers since they don't tend to hang out here?

Shuttleworth, as the rest of the "management" as you called it, is active on the mailing lists and on IRC.
