View Full Version : Beans you ask?

ubuntu-geek
January 11th, 2006, 06:01 PM
Happy New Year Everyone!

We've been noticing that we could use some freshening up on the forums, and since we've also read some questions asking us for clarification as to post counts - we thought we'd unveil what we've been cooking up!

Go on, have some fun with us!

First, we've added and changed the user ranks and rank icons (gotta love those coffee beans!)

As some of you know, we had implemented a post count change a while back - since we are a technical support forum, we do not count posts in the Community Chat or Site Discussion areas toward your post counts. In order to more properly reflect this change, we've changed "Posts: " under your name to be "Beans: " What are Beans, you ask? Simple! Beans are the posts you make in the technical support areas of this forum. To sweeten this up a little, we've added something new as well - if you are one of the top five most active volunteers on this forum in a month, we'll give you a special tag, title, to let you know how much we appreciate your help! Each month, the five "Beanies of the Month" will change.

Stay tuned for more exciting forum fun coming your way in this new year!

Cool, appreciated. How about a notice header (similar to those in the backports and backyard sections), maybe a temporary one, at the top of the non-technical forum pages that says something in the lines of "posts made to non-technical forums won't earn you beans"?

Yeah, good idea.. We'll also keep an on going archive of the "Beanies of the Month"...

wish it was that easy buddy... see..ubuntuforums is like one of those ninja schools where reputation is earned by hardwork, integrity and taking on missions that put the first two into use (lets call him ninja style)....so i guess we still have a lot more beans to grind  before we earn our cups!!
Well.. I can say for sure that every user with a cup on this site earned theirs.. I would not be here if it wasnt for them..... :D

I've always wondered -- what is the connection between Ubuntu and coffee, besides being a drink of choice for the bearded programmer?

I think the chanegs are great... one problem that I will point out, a while back it was pointed out that one of the great things about a post count only applying to the tech forums is it can give you an idea of that users expirence and let you know if you should follow his advice or not.

I just wanted to make sure that when a new user joins they are informed what beans are?

coffee theme has always reminded me of java lol

its just my opinion, but both colors of beans are very dark and the distinction between the two isnt easily noticed unless you stop and look directly at them. if you glance at someones name you just see 5 dark beans for everyone

no big deal, i just thought i would throw it out there

yeah, way back when. If I recall correctly, you wanted to stir up things (HA!) and get a fresh outlook on titles and images... which is when we started playing around with the coffee theme. :)

I think I was inspired by my fifth iced latte that day to suggest fun coffee themes. :) Oh yeah, and the fact that Ubuntu prominently uses coffee-browns ... but that's less important than my iced lattes. ;)

Hmmm.... I based the colors off of actual coffee beans raw & roasted ... I can play with the raw beans a bit more...

no big deal, i just thought i would throw it out thereI thought it was a pretty clear difference. Green coffee beans vs brown, roasted beans. Anyway, I noticed the color difference right off, but maybe I'm just observant. If it's hard for some to see a little adjustment wouldn't hurt aything.

Is it not more like Jedi school since ninjas are evil and Jedi are good?

Meanwhile.....

Do non-registered members see this as-is or do they see "posts"?

And in that (front-page) context, are those tech-support-only beans or all the beans?

Yes they see it as is.. And yes they are tech-support-only beans.. areas that are not counter per user are also not counted on the forum level.

ewww.. I don't like the beans. the forum was better before. Besides, I feel slightly... I dunno if discriminated would be the right word, more like left out, by all the admins having their avatars, and team members and admins having special cups or carafafes... I just don't like it.. seems un fair. Plus, I never really liked the coffee theme anyway.. I mean it's not like we couldn't have had the ubuntu logo instead of beans and stuff.. really.. And say the admins could be "Big Kahuna of Ubuntu" you know?

...makes sense....

Are total number of posts still available? If someone wanted to tally the community-related activity of the forum, for example?

I remember a thread comparing the Linspire, Fedora and Ubuntu forums versus the size of their community. I forget what the metric was.

I think the total number of members as well as the total number of posts in a certain period of time can be used to compare community stregth (I know size doesn't matter, but.... people like to brag...)

well, not everyone liked the cups, or the stars, or anything else on the forum, that's a given that you can't please all the people all the time. I'm sorry you don't like coffee, but that's your choice - and choice is wonderful.

as for it being better off in the lost lands of "before" ... that's an opinion some share, others don't.... however, memory is very fickle.... I'm sure there are oodles of people that think that life before the "internet" was "better" as well. LOL

the avatars, cups, and all the extra fun is just that, fun. If you think it's unfair, you're really taking it way too seriously. Really. It's all about fun ways of recognizing all the hard work everyone does on a daily basis... which is also why we created beanie of the month.

wow... I think that might be confusing... since it wouldn't be "all posts" just "beans" that are being counted...

you should probably keep the front page in line with what we're counting - which are beans.

azz - you're asking for a complete and total "all posts ever made" count on the front page, correct?

hmmm...

Maybe both, actually. Some would measure the might of our community on the tech support numbers alone. Others would be interested in knowing the total number of posts. If I wanted to know the size of this forum in comparison to another forum, I would compare apples with apples and not apples with beans :).

And say the admins could be "Big Kahuna of Ubuntu" you know? This forum is really about Ubuntu and helping people with tech support. Everything else is window dressing. People come for the express purpose of participating in discussions about Ubuntu and either receiving or giving assistance. They tend to stay because this is a great community that likes to have fun--and that's all the coffee beans, the backyard, community chat and so on are, ways to have some fun as a sideline only nominally related to this forum's true purpose. Frankly, I can't see the forums being "better" or "worse" simply because of some cosmetic changes that are designed solely for amusement.

Regarding the total posts, nothing has changed here people. Its always been the same code that counts posts since this forum went online with vbulletin. I just want to make that clear.

Why do we always have to beat a horse when someone is trying to bring some fun.. sigh..

I really wish I could make it some day... Not just for a cool title but for the reason that posting so much would mean that a proper contribution to this forum has been made and that would be one solid way to payback the help these forums provide. Well.. lets see who would be the first..

I thought there was a seperation made halfway. Anyway, if someone wanted to know the total number of posts in all forums, is there a way? And while we are on the topic, do other comaprable forums (Fedora, Linspire, Suse) diplay on their front page the total number of posts or do they only count those from certain areas?

Why do we always have to beat a horse when someone is trying to bring some fun.. sigh..

I agree that this is all in fun, but what is the path to enlightenment...simple lonely bean to a venti quad-shot low-fat cappuccino with tons of sugar packs? is there a "real" hierarchy here?

I see that azz has 5 steaming cups at almost 5000 posts! the same as a "donor" with only 200 posts, and matthew at 1300 posts.
