Beginner, here. I couldn't find the codecs in the Synaptic Package Manager, so I was able to find them online. I am clueless on what to type into the terminal that installs a tar.bz2 file. This seems basic enough that someone should be able to help me? Thank you in advance.

what exactly are you trying to install and for what app?

I'm attempting to install codecs for ubuntu, so that my sound will work.

you mean codecs for audio playback (mp3 etc), or the audio driver for your Realtek sound card?

if the former, read this page (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Multimedia) (+ 'RestrictedFormats')

one catch-call metapackage you should have installed is ubuntu-restricted-extras (contains all the gstreamer plugins you'll need)
