Quake 4: Wont initialize menus

Help,

I can't get Quake 4 to go any further than the loading game! When it tries to initialise meuns my pc stops responding.
Can anyone help??

If you could post some information about your graphics card and perhaps if you run it from a terminal and paste the output here it would help. The more information you post the better, be as descriptive as possible :)

yeah, also describe in more detail what exactly happens when you start it ? do you mean your PC just locks up and you have to reboot it, or does the game crashes and you go back into your desktop environment ? if so, you can try starting quake4 from the command line and see all the messages being printed - it will show what error the game encountered.
