View Full Version : [xubuntu] Help! I've lost sound on my system!

I'm using the onboard sound on my computer: Intel 82801BA-ICH2 with AD1885 Sound Card. I've had no trouble with sound, to speak of.

I was fiddling with my settings in Wine (v.1.1.21) this evening, trying to get something to open faster. At one point I thought Maybe the sound settings will make a difference. So I started checking and unchecking Sound Drivers in the program's application settings. At one point I unchecked ALSA Driver (which was the only one checked originally), and since then my system hasn't put out sound!

I've checked ALSA Driver in Wine again, made sure it's checked in the Default Settings, etc., but still my speakers won't put out sound. They hum as normal so I know they're getting power, and if I unplug them from the computer they make those sounds that speakers make when they're being plugged and unplugged. But they won't put out sound for anything else.

The weird (and disconcerting) part is that this isn't just affecting Wine. If I play MP3s in Audacious, there's no sound. If I play a movie file, no sound. Preview sounds in Pidgin, no sound. I've made sure sound is unmuted and high enough in Mixer. I've rebooted, even shut down and restarted--still no sound. Even audio CDs don't play music, even though they bring up a player and look like they're playing. I've also reinstalled Wine over the top. Can anyone suggest something for this?

Edit: since then, I've also tried a couple other things. I've plugged in a PCI sound card rather than relying on the onboard audio, with no result. I've also removed Wine from my system, thinking maybe that would set it back the way it was, but I'm still getting no sound. Does anyone out there have any ideas??

EDIT: Whoops, just before trying the Wine uninstall, I turned off my speakers. Sound's back! Now hopefully reinstalling it won't cause any trouble.
