pcntl extension for php

Hello, brand new ubuntu/*nix user so I apologize if my question is stupid, I have spent the morning trying to google this, but a lot of it is greek to me.

I installed breezy with howtoforge's perfect breezy setup tutorial.

I need to install the pcntl extension for php.

From what I can gather, I need to compile php from source to do this?

Will that screw up my ability to use apt-get for php updates in the future?

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to install pcntl?
