Hi,

I've found similar threads, and posted to them, and tried everything, but I can't get this problem sorted. I haven't been able to log in since Tuesday, and I'm now back using windows :( I'm really desperate to get this fixed. I have no more ideas what I can do.

(This problem seems similar to http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1139558)
---
After upgrading to Jaunty everything worked perfectly for about 3 days. Then I was prompted to update via update manager, and got the message that something was missing, and prompted to do a partial upgrade. The next time I rebooted after the partial upgrade I got this problem.

Now, when I try to log on I get a black screen, followed by the login screen again. On the second log on I get a message box saying:

Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem.

It asks if I want to see the contents of .xsession-errors, which I attach below.

If I close this box, the system shuts down. If I leave it there other windows open up. There are very limited graphics, and nautilus and firefox open at the top left. They don't have the x to close the window, and you can't move them or switch programs using tab. I can only remove them (and then access the menus) by running System Monitor using Gnome-do.

Following other threads I have done the following
--------------------------------------
- Run CHOWN and CHMOD on the .ICEauthority file
- Renamed .ICEauthority
- Deleted .ICEauthority
--------------------------------------
- Moved .gnome to /tmp/.gnome, and .gnome2 to /tmp/.gnome2
--------------------------------------
- dpkg-reconfigure xserver.xorg
--------------------------------------
- sudo apt-get purge remove gnome-session
- sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get autoclean
- sudo apt-get update
- sudo apt-get upgrade
- sudo apt-get install gnome session
- sudo apt-get install -f
--------------------------------------
- sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome session
- sudo dpkg --configure -a
--------------------------------------
- sudo killall gdm
- sudo apt-get install -f
- sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
--------------------------------------
- sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
--------------------------------------

I'm a week without Ubuntu at this stage. Can anyone give me any pointers? I'm completely stuck. There has to be a way, surely?

OK. Got this sorted here http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1139558
