I have just installed Ubuntu 9.04 (I haven't tried Ubuntu properly for nearly a year).

I'm having some trouble with my volume control. My laptop has hardware volume controls, which when pressed trigger the new growl-like volume level indicator. However, despite the change in level shown by the notification, the actual master volume level doesn't change. This is shown by clicking the loud-speaker icon in the system tray and seeing where that slider is.

So it's as if this new growl/mac like volume indicator is reacting to my volume key presses, but it's not going through to the actual ALSA master level.

Can anyone help?
Thanks for reading.

I have since discovered that running Totem causes this problem.

I've got the same problem on my desktop. I use a shortcut Alt+Up/Down for volume control, the notification shows a change, but none can be heard and the slider in the volume control applet doesn't move. But it doesn't happen on just Totem, same in Audacious and others.

Seems alot of similiar problems arise in jaunty. Try a diffrent sound mixer perhaps.
