View Full Version : [ubuntu_studio] Starting a Music Project

As the title says, I'm starting a music project featuring Ubuntu Studio. In general terms I plan to provide a website dedicated to recording music using Ubuntu Studio.

"Yawn," you say, "it's been done already." Well, yes and no. Yes, there have been websites for music and Ubuntu Studio. And, no, not quite like what I am doing.

When I started using Linux and Ubuntu Studio I had to search all over the web for all the information that I needed. What I want to do is consolidate it into one location while expanding it not only in scope but also in depth.

Over the next year I want to document the processes and things learned as I record, mix and master my band (we've even discussed making a couple of videos). I would be generating the content based on my experiences, explaining it in my own terms while also providing the link to web pages from which I learned. This website would include everything from installing Ubuntu Studio on a separate hard drive to using Ardour, from miking an amp to good practices when mixing.

Besides the usual news-type posts there would be a blog, static content like pictures and equipment lists, podcasts, possibly a forum and a wiki that would essentially contain a syllabus that will take you step by step through the whole process.

Why am I typing all this right now? Simply put, hat in hand, I could use some help.

I will be handling the VPS, the wiki and the content but specifically I would appreciate help with web design; either by advise or producing it.

Any additional musicians who would like to collaborate (especially drummers or lyricists) would be a plus, but not a necessity. Also, any graphic designers would be appreciated.

When will this happen? Well, I have been planning and researching for almost a month and a half and I would expect things to begin officially in one more month...if I get help with the web design.

So, if anyone is interested then please private message me.

Thank you for your time and interest.

Sounds cool...

What about electronic music?

I did a lot of web pages, all with Joomla. I can help you if you want. I can design the webpage, with menus, articles and etc, also a forum and other stuff.
Anyway, just mail me :guitar:

Sounds like a good idea to me...

I'm about to work on a new Ubuntu build and I'm now considering Ubuntu Studio with either ardour or audacity for recording my mixes and also converting my vinyl collection.

Maybe you should also consider creating a new group as well.

Well,

I'm an amateur musician who is putting together some recording equipment. Just came across your thread.

I'll be documenting my troubles, progress, etc. I suppose some of that might end up here, in the forums.

I have this bookmarked now, so we'll see...

Very cool project.

Now if the rt-kernel was finally fixed for amd64 (pc when using network) I could actually use Ubuntu for audio/midi (mainly midi sequencing)
Or maybe I should switch to 32bit ..

Firstly I want to thank all for their interest and comments and apologize for not replying sooner to this thread.

Secondly, I also wanted to explain a few more things about this project.

Currently, I am the main force behind this project although I certainly welcome others, either for their direct help and assistance or for good wishes. Supplementing me is a loose collection of people known as a "band" of which none are familiar with Linux and only one has expressly committed to this project.

As noted before, I am committed to this and I have budgeted and committed at least a year for this. But I also have the additional responsibilities of work and husband/father so progress will probably be measured in weeks more often than in days. Therefore, I believe that this project will only near maturity as the next year expires.

The goals are simple: To help musicians record their music using only Free and Open Source Software (notably Ubuntu Studio) and inexpensive, semi-professional computer and recording equipment.

This will be accomplished by documenting such things as:
how to install Ubuntu Studio
what is happening to sound when it is converted to digital
JACK - what is it and how to use it
how to record with Ardour
good recording practices
using LADSPA and LV2 plugins and their settings
how to mix with Ardour
explaining mixing and good mixing practices
how to master with Ardour and JAMin
explaining good mastering practices

At this point I feel that I must disclose that I am not a recording professional. While I have been playing music for over twenty years I do not have the recording experience to match. I am Everyman, just like everyone else, without special knowledge or experience.

While some may only see the disadvantages to my experience I find that it affords me something unique; a fresh perspective to help explain what I learn and experience in a language that the uninitiated can understand. Not only will I explain the nomenclature but hopefully provide the requisite knowledge to help bridge understanding.

You may ask, "If you aren't some studio god, how can you do this?" That answer, my friend, is multifaceted and expansive, but I will be succinct; as Jono says, "Community."

Not only can this community help but I have already started contacting individuals, e.g. Jono Bacon and Dave Phillips, and also various mixing and mastering communities and forums. How cool is it to accumulate advice from guys who make bleeding gold records?

As it stands now I have been focused mainly on developing the base website, both in content and resources. We have secured a VPS and will now transition into setting up the website. Once that is accomplished then I will begin diligently working on the project's content proper.

Once again thank you for your interest and support. And I particularly look forward to your involvement in a rewarding and meritorious project.

What about electronic music?

At this time I am planning on focusing on recording music produced primarily with live instruments with the notable exception of Hydrogen drums in some instances.

This does not mean that I am excluding it and I welcome others to submit their knowledge and experience for inclusion. I simply have very limited experience with electronic music and will be devoting the majority of my efforts otherwise.

Thank you! After our previous PMs I have started looking at Joomla templates and should have one picked hopefully before the end of this coming week now that I have resolved the website content.

Again, thank you very much for your assistance.

What type of group are you suggesting? One here in Ubuntu Forums? or elsewhere?

Check out drupal.org for dynamic web content management.

Thank you kindly for the suggestion. Unfortunately I doubt I currently would have time to become proficient with Drupal, but I will remember this for any possible future work.

Luckily, B4RR13N705 has kindly offered to help set up the website with Joomla which is truly appreciated as the only experience I have with website design dates back to static html pages.

I would certainly welcome any documentation you will produce. Hopefully it can be a mutually beneficial situation. Thank you.

This brings up an interesting point that I hadn't mentioned yet. I will be relying on Ubuntu Studio 8.04 Hardy 32 bit.

Why? Stability. I eschew the bleeding edge because I want to focus my energies and creativity on making music, not rediscovering my OS and methods.

Thank you all for your comments and involvement.

I think that you should also create a group maybe in ubuntuforums, to recompile information for the web page, to have some content when the web is finally created.

My older musician friends are acoustically based. The new, fresh fish are really happy with Electro-anything. I'm bridging (at least) two generations.

Thank you all for your comments and involvement.

Just tonight the system went from a base Ubuntu 9.04 Jackalope (Gnome) to getting Studio downloaded onto it. (I'd like to create a stand alone Studio Repositories install CD, but I diverge...). I just installed the computer along with some Vintage () audio equipment and a four track mixer in the 'Studio'.

As I see what basics stuff is required I'll be augmenting the min hardware set.

My goals are to be able to transfer analog (mostly some form of tape) recordings to digital format (Archive) and be able to record live music- either in the space or work with recordings made other places and mix them down, post production.
