I'd like my PC to shutdown directly on pressing the power button, instead of displaying the log out/restart/shutdown etc dialog box (forcing me to go get a keyboard).

But after I changed the "When the power button is pressed" action in gnome-power-preferences from "Ask me" to "Shutdown", nothing happens at all when I hit the power button. Any thoughts why? Shutting down through the "Ask me" dialog works fine.

I changed this setting today too.

But,... for me it worked. I was glad to finally get it working well enough with the remote to be able to put away the keyboard and mouse.

I don't know why it's not working for you but .... Some motherboards have BIOS options for what happens when you press the power button, You may want to look into those settings.
