Is there a way to stop someone from changing the bios or boot settings on my computer? Maybe by setting a password or something? How does/would this work?

Yes, you can do this, but almost all BIOS passwords are easily circumvented (FYI).

Boot your computer , enter your BIOS, and set a password.

How exactly are they easily circumvented?

Most bios passwords are reset if you remove the internal battery. Alternately one can pull the hard drive.

So yes a bios password can be helpful to slow down a casual cracker, but you should not rely on them to be of much protection for personal data or against theft.

while you are in entering a password, consider setting your system NOT to boot off the cd/dvd. this always can be changed when you want this option.....

as said before, if some one can get inside your pc and take out the HDD then its all over.
