So there are tons of people having problems with ATI's inability to support its customers properly involving the new Xorg server 1.6. This has to do with the version 9.4 proprietary drivers from ATI (fglrx).

The most straightforward way of getting around this problem is dropping your ATI card and buying the best nVidia card in your price range, but for people using laptops (including myself), this seems much more costly or impossible than just staying with 8.10.

I'm currently using the IBM Thinkpad T60, which has the ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 512MB and judging from what other people that have this laptop have said about upgrading, I'm seriously doubting I'll try it in the near future.

Which is where my idea comes in. The problem is Xorg's new version doesn't support ATI's old prop. driver, right? Can't we just force Xorg to stay at version 1.5 either at installation or through synaptic just after installation?
