i like the excess.

I thought you used to use things like OpenBox or Fluxbox, weird to see you using KDE. I just tried to put KDE on mine and it always looks like dook. :P
I think 8.04 has KDE 3.5 so maybe that's why.

Shiki Colors is infinity better than Dust. Unless there's some kind of licensing issue, I cannot fathom Shiki not being included in distros like Ubuntu.

Fluxbox + Xfdesktop = Perfect.

This is the merger of the setups I have previously running on my netbook (fluxbox) and desktop (xfce). As said on my last post, creating usable menus is one of the most annonying aspects of a *box WM, while xfwm has less customisability in window control than the boxes. I choose fluxbox mainly because it includes a panel, allowing me to remove xfce-panel as well, saving a bit more memory.

there were a lot of votes for its inclusion, but ultimately, I think, only themes specifically developed for ubuntu, by the community were included. I really wanted Macchiatto, and shiki in there.

All the *-colors stuff is GPL :).

I agree. It looks like it's GPL, so I can't imagine why not. It's even already been packaged for Ubuntu (through the PPA).

The same guys who maintain the PPA are submitting it to Debian and working on the packaging (mostly because the icons are currently being used by Xubuntu), and once that's done, it'll be synced from there into Karmic's repos.

Geeeeez. You guys are killin' me. Since I got hooked on this thread, I've been tinkering pretty much solidly!

Here's my latest effort, which I think I'll keep for a while. It's pretty much entirely stolen/modified from bits of other peoples' desktops, so I'll give credit where it's due.

115100115101

* Wallpaper is from Zixpk.com (http://www.zixpk.com/2008/09/hd-wallpaper-aker.html), thanks to someone earlier on this thread for pointing me in the right direction
* GTK theme is dust sand
* Emerald theme is my own, modified from White Mod (http://www.gnome-look.org): changed engine, titlebar alignment, border/text sizes (to fit my tiny screen!)
* Panel is normal gnome-panel, but set to match the window borders
* Dock is AWN, with my own theme (just default with modified colours, etc.)

I'm also running Compiz with just a teensy bit of transparency on the windows, and yes, before you say, it, I know I should be using alpha blur! However, I've tried using blur twice now, and both times it's turned my screen into a big black nothing and I've had to boot to recovery mode to sort it out (ouch!).

By the way, would someone PLEASE convince me it's a bad idea to try KDE? Because all the screenies here are gorgeous, and ME WANT, but I don't need anything else to install on my poor little netbook!

---

Windows is good for Gamers and who needs Apps like AutoCad, Eplan, SAP etc. Unfortunately many Boss-Companies are supporting only Windows. Mac-OS haves many Users with money, too. So here you can have more possibilities to have a Application for your Work, too. Linux get always stronger, because it's a very good OS all over all. Maybe the Boss-Companies and others Companies will respect Linux in the future more ... :-?

If there some interaction in the notification (like buttons in the old notification-daemon), OSD displays a dialog box.

It's working again. :) I took the "notifications" form Gnome-Colors 3.7. Now I don't know if this was the error or because I forgot to minimize the Rhythmbox-Window :-?

Why should it be a bad idea?

You should really try it. It's by no means a bad idea - I myself couldn't get used to it (and their network manager couldn't connect to WPA2), but there are some really sweet things that might win many others over if they gave it a chance.

@raul_, @perfectska04:-

KDE isn't a bad idea, but me putting more stuff on my netbook should be! I've only got an 8GB SSD, which I'm rapidly filling up! I've got just over 1GB left. Would be okay, because there's an expansion slot for 2 SD cards, but one doesn't work in Jaunty (yet!), and I need the other one hot-pluggable, so I can't use a fixed expansion yet.

Since I've already got a bunch of stuff installed for Gnome, if I also install KDE and more associated stuff, how much of my drive will it eat?!

PS. Thanks, guys. All this prettification is helping me on my mission to convert everyone I know to Linux :)

This is where the mini.iso and --no-install-recommends argument comes in handy when apt-get/aptitude installing stuff.

Failing that, if you open up synaptic and just list all the stuff that's installed, you should be able to remove several hundred packages without losing any functionality (for example, you've no doubt got xorg video drivers installed for about 25 different cards you don't have). Removing old kernels frees up a lot of space, too.

Running:

sudo aptitude clean

Also ought to help.

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/492/screenshotcos.png

Just be careful when uninstalling stuff: if synaptic informs you that 20 other packages need to be removed as well and those packages happen to include stuff like Dbus, Gdm, Gnome-whatever, Hal, etc, click cancel.

you could do a kdebase installation instead of all of kde. kdebase comes with dolphin, konqueror, konsole and the like. then, you can add things that you need/want. depending on what you want, it could cut down on the space you'd use by as much as half.

Anyways, you know you can edit the theme with Emerald Theme Manager right? ;)

PS: If you think Windows 7 has over sized borders then you're wrong. The glass extends into the client area (tool bar area) to give it the appearance that it's apart of the window border and to show off the glass. :)

see the difference between the two pictures. look at the inactive buttons. pixbuf engine by default renders them ugly like in picture two. but with the patched engine, you can make them transparent.

Your using CrunchBang has nothing to do with you misqualifying it as simply Ubuntu with Openbox. Anyone with Ubuntu can add openbox and it won't be the same speedy, snappy CrunchBang. There is quite a difference, as you would know had you tried Ubuntu with Openbox first. Much of the gnome apps, daemons, etc., are intentionally removed and replaced with GTK equivalents or other speedier replacements.

Decided to take my own advice and clean up a little. From MSN:

I'm not sure how memory usage on /proc/meminfo is calculated but it's not the same as, say, free -m, minus buffers (how most apps count memory usage).

His free -m output is probably more around the 70-90mb mark.

Limits to how much you can download/upload in a month; if you go over the cap, they'll either start charging you extra or choke your internet speed to usually something like 64kbps (ie. the bandwidth you'd get out of some cups and string). It's very popular among ISPs in Australia where internet services are about six or seven years behind the times.

I've got enough off peak time (midnight to noon), but that is also taken away if I break my on peak limits...500mb over 4 day ouch.

That said, my ISP provides a pretty comprehensive mirror for users, which keeps me covered on the FOSS side of things.

The borderless Konsole is done by my window decoration not having any side or bottom decorations. You can do it with the bespin decorations by setting the border size to tiny. You also have to turn off scroll bars and the tab bar.

The new Dredg album is good stuff. I would be very surprised if they ever released an album that I didn't like.

What is that Cover Album kinda thing? Where can i get that?
That's actually a CD Art Display skin. You can get it here (http://otisbee.deviantart.com/art/ThaFrame-116946137?offset=40). I think I'll probably have to write a script that extracts the needed images from the skin and packages up my Superkaramba theme with them since people keep asking about it.

which theme is that?

edit: got it! openbox should give you some kind of award for best themes.

Thanks man. Actually I felt surprisingly rewarded when I found out that a couple things I submitted to box-look wound up in the openbox-themes debian package ;)

25mb on openbox? Good job, good job.

I guess the Arch developers are doing the good job. Here is Debian (but also pypanel, which might use 10 MB) running on the same computer:

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m128/envyouraudience/sshot/th_2009-03-19-151728_1024x768_scrot.png (http://s103.photobucket.com/albums/m128/envyouraudience/sshot/?action=view&current=2009-03-19-151728_1024x768_scrot.png)

I put the output of free on the Arch system below.

I'm not sure how memory usage on /proc/meminfo is calculated but it's not the same as, say, free -m, minus buffers (how most apps count memory usage).

His free -m output is probably more around the 70-90mb mark.

This is how: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/en-US/Reference_Guide/s2-proc-meminfo.html

Active — The total amount of buffer or page cache memory, in kilobytes, that is in active use. This is memory that has been recently used and is usually not reclaimed for other purposes.
Just for kicks I added 'free -m >& free_m.log' to my austostart.sh (a file that is executed by openbox when openbox-session is executed, which is in my .xinitrc) and here it is:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 122 47 74 0 4 24
-/+ buffers/cache: 17 104
Swap: 128 0 128
For even more kicks I tried it with no X:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 122 34 87 0 4 16
-/+ buffers/cache: 13 108
Swap: 128 0 128

I concur with you on that. I liked it from the first time I saw it. It is clean and very brown. That's what I liked about Ubuntu when I first saw it (brown). I have tried KDE a few times, but I always come back to gnome because I don't like clutter.

As for the ancient part, my cpuinfo shows that I'm using a Katmai, released in early 1999. As for the generic part, I guess you mean rudimentary. I did physically remove everything from the motherboard other than the network card and video card. The kernel is just the default arch kernel, so I guess that's generic too.

For anyone wondering...

This is Windows XP using WindowsBlinds, with the VistaPlus v.3 skin.

You'll never catch me using Vista.

I found another screen hangng around, so I am using dual monitor.
I have a panorama wallpaper which is 2560x1024, and xfce-panel-cairo patch for Xfce 4.6.1. I also have some screenlets.

Got compiz working, so panel has a blur effect now. I also changed wallpaper, so I easier can see which windows I have running.
