Whats this EPIC .. i dont understand.. someone care to explain please..

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/epic

It's sort of the radical of the early 90's, wicked of the mid-90's, or awesome of the late-90's. Sadly, I stopped following youth vernacular after that.

It is a feature of the customized theme Crystal SVG I think.

Well, it sparked my interest because Windows (XP, at least) allows you to make a multi-level panel with the window list right on top of the QuickLaunch bar. I don't know how to get that working on a single panel in Gnome.

Doesn't it just happen automatically if you make your panel large enough? Open up a whole bunch of windows and try it. I don't think it matters what theme you're using, although maybe certain themes can enable/disable it.

I am running the 4.3 beta and I haven't been able to figure out the whole make the dashboard separate from the desktop thing. Do you think maybe you could help me out?

Alex

Sure.
Click the cashew and zoom out.
Now you'll have a bunch of new options, including "configure Plasma".
Click on it and then "Separate dashboard from desktop".
After that you just bring the dashboard up and add widgets to it. Maybe a little buggy on the beta, though.

That's very nice.
It's only possible to rotate widgets along the Z axis unless the widget is specifically written to allow more advanced rotations. To my knowledge, there's only one that allows it, and it's just a proof of concept.

The only thing to change on my system in probably the last 6 months, besides software updates, is a re-written conky and a couple of new icons, that have creeped onto my panel.

Oh and I change wallpapers almost daily (there's not much to see outside my window. It's either compulsively change wallpapers, go stir-crazy or go outside into the real world and I'm not likely to do that last one).

pretty nice looking desk, too. what is that? looks like awn in vista.
It's RocketDock, basically Vista's AWN yeah.

Now that's snazzy. Looks like a lassekongo83 theme.
I think it is actually, or at least a port of one. You can find heaps of great ported XP themes for Vista. The clincher though is that so many of them are only Basic themes (no compositing)

Hello! Dweeby ol' me, finally weighing in on the screenshot thread...

Let's see...

I'm on an Acer Aspire One, so not so much screen real estate! I'm running Compiz w/a customised Emerald theme I'm calling "Dusty Glass". Couldn't find one I liked on t'Interweb, so I made my own :) The fonts are normal sans, and the windows are just a colour-modified version of Human. And I'm running Conky and AWN.

I got the wallpaper off an Acer Aspire One forum, which sent me here: http://picasaweb.google.com/chester222/A1Wallpapers#.

In looking at all my desks over the past four months I've realized something. I'm not changing the setup of my desk in any substantial way, just flipping around GTK/icons/wallpaper. I'm always on Compiz, my panel/conky doesn't change, nothin'. Just new colors.

I needs me some inspiration.

I'm feeling the same. Even worse, it's just wallpapers nowadays. This is especially the case with fluxbox on my netbook. Any fluxbox user user would know the insane effort to create the customised menu, (the autogen debian menu is *not* sane) especially *manually* matching each menu item to an icon. Then there are the custom keybindings etc. Starting all over again from scratch using something requires much effort.

Atm though, I'm continuing to deconstruct what was stock xfce on my desktop. I already replaced the session manager with lxde's. Now I'm looking at replacing xfwm with open/fluxbox and maybe even the panel with tint. xfdesktop is the only component I really need these days, now that xfce 4.6, following freedesktop specs has sane autogenerated menus, and only minor adjustments are needed. Autogenerated menus ftw :)

P.S: Giant Speck. Wow. wow. You reproduced that screenlet with conky...insanely accurately.

Why would you want to disable the text shadow? It's there so you can read the text, no matter what background you have.

But then again, personal preference I guess. :p

But then again, personal preference I guess. :p

There are certain backgrounds where a dark text shadow actually makes it difficult to read the icon text. Also, if I'm using a neutral background such as a subtle texture or gradient, shadowless icon text looks best. At least for me.

KDE 3.5.9 allowed me to enable/disable text shadow, change the color of the icon text, and allowed me to adjust the spacing of the windows. This was probably because the desktop on KDE 3.5.9 wasn't controlled by a file manager. On Gnome 2.26, the desktop is controlled by Nautilus, so there aren't many options for desktop icons. You can't change the colors, you can't change the shadows, and the only two icon alignment options are "keep aligned" and "clean up by name."

I have no idea because I haven't fresh installed it. However, judging by this post (http://pinheiro-kde.blogspot.com/2009/05/anatomy-of-airy-clock.html) my guess is that it has already been committed (or is close)

Loving OpenBox.
Is that the default configuration of pypanel in Crunchbang? I'm wondering because I remember an entry on the CB blog (at that time I don't think it was yet a distro) describing how to launch the OB menu from pypanel.

Muahaha. Compiz standalone is glorious, is it not.
Too much bling IMO. Give me something simple. Then again, I use my computer for five things:

Linux:
Coding
Music (as in sitting there for hours at a time just listening, doing nothing else)
Movies
Web

Windows:
Games

For all of that, I see no need for anything but the tool for the task.

Of pypanel, yes, of everything else, I customized. Yes, to open OB menu from panel, just click the symbol on the very right. :)
Do you or anyone know if there is a way to configure colors and change launchers, etc on this panel? I can't figure out how.

haha.. that is a plugin in Compiz, you can install additional plugin's for compiz from synaptic

Thanks for pointing me to those additional plugins.
I noticed there was this color opacity plugin. It can be used to make conky real-transparent. Just can't figure out how to make its border go away.
Without borders, it won't Ctrl-F (activate fakeARGB) conky window.

EDIT :

Better way to do it : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1048845

Not conky, just some pygtk. You can have it anyway though :P

You'll have to do some edits to make it go where you want it to. I tried not to make it too hard. Main is RSS_Agg_View.py.

First you get so bored that you decide that despite the multitude of desktop widgets available, you have to make your own, so you learn python with cairo and search the internet for how to do exactly what you want to do.

Beyond the desktop widgets, lets see if I can sum up everything I did to my desktop...

I'm using xfce4-panel and transparent images as buttons (they look soooo much smoother than themed buttons) with a gtk theme I hacked together myself out of a few other themes, with almost nothing recognizable left. I modified an emerald theme to match. I used the stylish extension on firefox to make the nice bookmark menus look like menus and also modify how google looks and such. I modified the Eikon icon theme to have dark toolbar stuff from Oxygen Refit 2 Black. I'm using compiz-deskmenu to provide my right-click menu. Wallpaper from interfacelift.

I can upload any part of it on request.

Also - @Tipped OuT: That wallpaper is Awesome.
