You don't have the same problem with busy wallpapers, it seems.

Using the latest Shiki Colors (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Shiki-Colors?content=86717) with the accompanying icon set, GNOME Colors (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/GNOME-colors?content=82562). The wallpaper is the Horsehead Nebula (http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/details/1875/horsehead_nebula.html) from InterfaceLIFT. The clock and weather stuff is plain old conky. :)

When I use Windows and then look at the *nix desktop, I'm equally depressed but theming capabilities is pretty far down the list. I can deal with an ugly desktop; rudimentary window management, broken focus model and a lack of decent mouse acceleration manages to make simple tasks daunting and is my single biggest gripe when going back to Win.
+1 to you, sir. And here is your prize.

Thankyou, good chap!

That's compiz-deskmenu, m'friend. Bound to ctrl-space via the Compiz settings manager. Then I use gmrun for my execute command dialog. I don't think I have xbindkeys installed at all, actually.

How did you get that transparent effect with compiz-deskmenu? I've installed it but can't find any settings for colour or transparency at all.

I actually think KDE 4 was a good jump forward for DE's in general. Even though the release was one of the worst I've ever seen, it's overall better and is a decently large improvement over KDE 3.

That's what I'm talking about. The initial release is going to be a disaster, just like KDE 4.0, and we won't see any improvement until a few versions later, like KDE 4.2.

Frankly, I'd be 200% pleased if GNOME 3.0's only changes were truly transparent panels, KDE4 style notification area, and the ability to change panel colors without worrying about widget class matching or applications/applets that don't use normal matching classes. Just that and the general minor improvements we always get would be more than enough to make me happy.

I sincerely hope you're joking. If you can't seriously appreciate the usefulness of being able to pull down a full-screen overlay to interact with things like workspaces (as opposed to near-useless applets on 20px-wide panels or free-floating, "widgets", on your desktop), you're not trying very hard.

And on that note, one of the KDE hackers should get down to creating a container plasmoid: a plasma overlay which can contain other arbitrarily chosen plasma applets and be activated with a button plasmoid on the plasma panel (I'm developing RSI from typing the letters, "p", "l", "a", and, "s", repeatedly).

That sounds like the widget dashboard. You can add a button to your panel that dims the screen and brings all the plasmoids to the front. This is what it looks like.

Um, Gnome 2.26 was just released, Gnome 2.27.1 is the current state of development, 2.28 will be the next stable release. I thought 2.28 was 3.0? Aren't we looking at closer to 6 months?

I can't really pick up on the effects from the screenshot. Contra to everyone else, I don't think that the new Activities system is that bad. I just hope that they let you keep the existing setup with Applications/Places/System. Of course, since I'm using Xfce4, it doesn't really affect me much. (But there's always the risk that they try to take Xfce5 in a completely different direction...)

2.28 will have the Gnome-shell that everyone's bitching about now included, but it won't be enabled by default.

Of course, since I'm using Xfce4, it doesn't really affect me much. (But there's always the risk that they try to take Xfce5 in a completely different direction...)Even just within the 4.x branch, there have been some pretty dramatic changes made to Xfce. Whole new file manager and way of drawing the desktop; whole new panel; compositing; configuration backend completely rewritten. Hopefully the Xfce team won't feel pressured to do something drastic just because of a version number change. Xfce is evolving and improving just fine by itself.

2.30 will be Gnome 3.0.

Work in progress for a new UI setup I have going. Supports around 15-16 individual applications other than those already in Docky, before Docky starts to overlap the notification area. However, I cannot think of any situation where I'd be running 17+ applications simultaneously - individual windows of applications are grouped so this isn't a problem. I can scroll through the windows contained within an application using the scroll wheel in docky.

I use scale for the top left corner, making Window Management easy. I'm keeping this setup for a long, long time (with tweaks).

Things to do include:

- Change mint menu logo (I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty)
- See if I can shrink the garish Notification area icons somehow.

Graphs in conky need a little work, cant read texts above them with ease.
Desktop icons only show when you click on them; Its a glitch I guess due to conky, but I like it this way better :p

Anyone know a command that gives % memory usage so I can use it like I'm using it with those icons before 'Root :' & 'Home :' ?
What I did there is take ten's place of % use of / & /home from df (like '8' from '87%') and display it in pie chart fonts.

${font Pie charts for maps:size=14}${execi 30 df | grep "/dev/sda5" | cut -c53}${font}One more thing, can I make those screenlets in bottom left somehow un-clickable.. or even better, click-though-able ?

Edit:
Umm, think I'm not supposed to ask questions in here, please ignore them in that case.

elmer_42
May 9th, 2009, 05:53 PM
It's pretty interesting. I like the way it handles windows; you can place them by holding shift and pressing a number on the keypad. They use the term gravity (http://unexist.scrapping.cc/wiki/subtle/Gravity). Because of this, it's unlike other tiling WMs I've used. Their describe the system (as found here (http://unexist.scrapping.cc/wiki/subtle/Subtle)) like this: The screen is divided into a grid and clients are placed into it. The placement of windows can be controlled either via tags or directly modified with grabs. I've only been using it for a few minutes, but it's very easy to use. It's in the AUR here (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=13016).

It might be easier to get used to this WM than others simply because of the gravity system. If you want to get started, the ArchWiki has a nice page about it here (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Subtle). The official quickstart page is located on the subtle wiki here (http://unexist.scrapping.cc/wiki/subtle/Quickstart), but the ArchWiki page looks more helpful if you're just trying to get it working quickly.

Haven't adjusted this one for generic fonts so expect it to look messed up and have fun getting the voffset values right.

That is beautifully understated (which with KDE4.x, is no mean feat).

What's that panel ?

Looks like tint2.

It does, also the tint config is open in the second screenie.

Indeed, it is tint2.

Very crisp.
Would you be able to post your conkyrc file?
Thanks

Sure thing. Some minor changes were made in the order of system info results, but you can change all that around. Note: I use a large display, changing font size on the clock will likely require changing voffset, offset and goto entries in order to achieve the desired look.

The mind really boggles over some of these affectatious (I'm positive that's a word <.<) panel layouts. Two panels, each using barely 50% of the space they've taken up?

If you can bear with my crappy gimp skills ...and chronic sarcasm (the doctors told me there was nothing they could do), for your consideration:

It has many user-noticeable new features since 4.2.
Some new effects are added, better previews on dolphin, dashboard support (widgets separate from desktop), better system tray, etc, etc...

@gymophett: It's pretty good. I don't like all the icons, though - if they were panel launchers, your desktop would be less cluttered, and you could hit them from anywhere.

Also, where's your window list and bottom panel? Did it just not show up in the screenshot?

And there is another thread for this, you know. It's right at the top of the Cafe index.

just resized by right click/strech. the glass looking panel is part of the wallpaper. im trying to find a dark(or maybe light)theme that will look good with it.

Oki doki, here's my spartan desktop setup that I have for 3 years or so and never changed it, except the icon themes (from mac4lin to Oxygen Refit 2)

Theme: AquaAdvanced-R (gnome-look.org), combined with "Glider" "form" controls
Icon Theme: Oxygen Refit 2 (gnome-look.org)
Wallpaper: some mac (obviously) from the Mac4Lin wallpaper package version 3.something, I've never got to actually change the apple with a huge and shiny gnome foot :)
Additions: Gnome Global Menu ( http://code.google.com/p/gnome2-globalmenu )

Firefox uses iFox Smooth theme (addons.mozilla.com , just give a search for it's name) and TinyMenu plugin... lot's of space in there :)

Other than that, I've added an extra panel on the right with auto-hide option enabled and modified visible size to 1 pixel not to be too intrusive ... so it holds the Menu Bar applet and some other secondary shortcuts like mail clients, GPrename and System Monitor ...

The main panels have an image as background that I've made with GIMP years ago and never changed my habits about it :) as smooth as possible

It`s not openbox, its standard gnome. The wallpaper is one the highest rated on gnome-look, 1st page I think.

There are 2 ways of doing it. The cheats version is to remove the bottom panel and set the top`s autohide size to 1 with gconf-editor. That way you still get your notifications and can call the menu with Alt F1. - But that`s for cissys.

To truly have nothing to click you have to remove gnome-panel from /usr/bin/. I said move not delete - you might want it back.

Gnome-do is essential and a good knowledge of your keyboard shortcuts. Then I use that groovy fullscreen transparent terminal thingy
