So I don't have the AC97 Audio Controller driver thing, and I have a file here that is supposedly the driver I need... and have no idea how to install it.

There's a guide INSIDE the zip, but I have no idea what it's trying to tell me. I'm so confused.

edit: Or is there perhaps an easier way of doing this?

Why do you need to install a sound driver?
Usually sound just works.

Agreed, to some extent anyway. Sound can, at times, be a royal pain.

That being said my old board had a AC97 audio controller and I never had issues with it in 8.04/8.10. You shouldn't need drivers.

I'm no longer using that board though, it got turned into my new server so no need for audio there :D

then why is it that I have absolutely no sound, period, no matter what I try?

Edit: Fine, I messed with ALSA for a while. Why did nobody tell me the "External Amplifier" checkbox would turn my sound off?

Most likely because you didn't ask?
