I have a Ratel/8.10 for a few months. I now get the Upgrade Icon for 9.04. It won't go away. My understanding is the the *.04 and *.10 releases aren't even compatible. How do I get rid of the reminder? It's annoying. And, no, it appears not straightforward to Upgrade.

Is it either safe or recommended to 8.10 -> 9.04? Looking at all the threads, I gather not.

if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

If 8.10 works fine for you, why move?

I still recommend waiting a little bit before upgrading to 9.04. I've seen a lot of corrupted upgrades this time around.

And if you're happy with 8.10, there's no problem staying with it. 9.04 has some new features, and it really is a nice version, but there's nothing in it you can't live without.

It's really a matter of personal preference.

I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04, and I'm happy. I liked 8.10, but could never get my old HP printer working. With 9.04 and a bit of effort I got it working. I think driver support is a bit better with 9.04, and some applications such as Open Office are newer versions. Boot times are supposedly quicker, but I didn't notice nor do I care much. Overall, I think there are just minor improvements, so if you're happy with 8.10 keep it.
I did not "upgrade", I backed up my documents and photos, etc and installed from an installation CD. I tried 9.04 for a few days dual booting 8.10, then wiped the slate clean and installed completely fresh from the 9.04 installation disc I made. Everything went smoothly, and I reinstalled the applications I use and my backed up stuff.

How do I get rid of the reminder? It's annoying.

Go to System/Administration/Software Sources "Updates" tab and change the dropdown menu from "Normal Releases" to "Long Term Support releases only".
That should get rid of the upgrade notification.

I agree with Tom. Waiting a bit until the upgrade fury dies down is a prudent move. I only just updated my DARU1 a few days ago from 8.10 to 9.04 and luckily, everything went well. The other pleasent suprise I noticed is that 9.04 seems to run a bit faster on my laptop than 8.10 did. In the past Debian always seemed a bit faster than Ubuntu on similar hardware. Now they seem to be equally fast.

That's one of the confusions. *.04 are LTS, while *.10 are, I guess, Normal. The Upgrade reminder was/is set to Normal, which is why I don't get why I get the Upgrade Reminder. Not really a Big Deal, just irritating.

I did a Restart and the Icon cleared. I guess the icon lives only during the session when the check happens. I can deal with that. And I'll wait.
thanks.

Actually, LTS releases are only every 2 years, next one due in 2010.
9.04 is "normal" release.:)

and the numbers refer to the month and year of the release: 8.10 October (tenth month) of 2008. 9.04 April (Fourth month) of 2009 etc. Last LTS
Long Term Support was 8.04.

Now I get it. Overloaded nomenclature.

Remember you're going to see a disproportionate amount of bad upgrades compared to good ones because good ones don't need their problems solved ;)
