View Full Version : Post count clarified

From time to time we have this recurring discussion about post count and we are always having to clarify that only posts made in tech sections add to the post count (i.e. non-chat forums for those just joining us). I had a thought earlier today that I figured I would share for discussion. This may help reduce some of the confusion.

Perhaps we could change the line under the avatar that lists post count fromPosts: 236to readtech forum posts: 236or something similar. That might help eliminate or at least reduce the misunderstandings and stop the "Why aren't my posts being counted" threads.

Your thoughts... (Oh, if you have a better title than "tech forum posts" let's discuss that as well.)

I'm adding a poll for Aysiu and others. :)

EDIT: There was a weird formatting error on the poll question. Sorry about that. It should readDo you think it would be helpful to change the title "Posts:" to "Tech Forum Posts:"

I'm adding a poll for Aysiu and others. :) Go to love the polls!

P.S. I'm voting yes. I think it's a great idea!

It might be a better idea to put one of those orange headers (like the ones in the backyard and the backports section) to the community chat and forums discussion sections that reads something like "Note: posts made to non-technical forum sections won't add to your post count".

I have to stop posting polls on Friday and Saturday nights...

I agree, if only for the fact that new users won't have to puzzle about their posts not being added.

Sounds good. I'm fine either way, but if it makes it clearer for people, by all means, do it.

I'd prefer jus the post count to be hidden. What advantage does it bring to the community?

hmph.... from a newbie standpoint, I'd be slightly more trusting of a 1,227 posts person than a 2 posts person.. Not to say that all the 2 posts people are dumb/don't know what they are doing or anything.. I do _not_ feel this way now.. I have 411ish posts, but that doesn't mean I am smart or anything.. which I'm not..

I voted yes..

Well, there was a cuffuffle about a referal/feedback rating that was once implemented. Post count is objective and somewhat an indicator of your experience to people who are new and do not know you.

But that does not mean that postcount is a measure of competency.

However, after a certain number of posts, the number becomes irrelevant. I dunno, I guess after a few hundred posts? Maybe instread of post count you get one of three messages (ex: "first few posts", "has posted a fair amount", "has posted a lot")

I wonder how many people would chose to show their postcount if it was turned off by default and you could turn it on yourself? Then, it would be cooler to not display your postcount.

im all about posts per day.

There are only two times I care about post counts:

1. When something looks like spam, and it's being posted by someone with 0 posts or only 1 post.

2. When someone who's posted a lot is acting like a jackass.

may I ask the diference between some one who posts a lot being a jackass and some one who posts a little?

This poll is no longer necessary. See this thread for changes that supercede this question...I like ubuntu-geek's solution better than what my question hinted at.
