I've noticed that when I change my desktop wallpaper in Ubuntu Jaunty, it does so with a neat alpha-blending effect, which takes several seconds and swallows up most of my CPU time. Is there a way to disable this effect? I've tried changing wallpapers with Compiz disabled, and the blending still occurs, so I know it is not that. :)
