I've installed the game from a run file... and was installed without any problems... but when i've run it ./et I had a black screen... then gnome just logged out. Any suggestions how to fix the thing?

what video card are you using? did you setup the 3D drivers according to the http://www.ubuntuguide.org? have you gotten any other 3D games to work?

If you are using a nvidia video card you could try this ?

Indeed, I have experienced the same problem, and fixed it by modifying the xfree config file as discribe in the previous link.
