replace index.html with php

Is there an easy way to replace index.html so that for e.g. index.php always runs instead?

Running apache2 and php5. There has to be a really easy way, but google has yet to yield the answer1

Delete index.html? The server will goto which ever index file there...if only index.php, that is what will run. (Some servers running "hotlinking" set up in an hta.access file will only run php.....I think...but I don't know how to do it specifically.)
