View Full Version : Human Theme is Ugly

Does anyone else find the default Human theme really offputting? I immediately change it whenever I install Ubuntu.
I'm glad to see that Dust is included by default, it is a big step up from Human in my opinion. I also prefer Clearlooks, New Wave, and Dark Room to Human. As for themes that are not installed by default, I like Shiki colors a lot, it is very polished and complete.
I think when many people give Ubuntu a test drive and are deciding whether or not to install it instead of, or in addition to, Windows, they most likely base much of their judgement on the look of the OS (i.e. the theme). Thus an ugly default theme would likely hurt adoption.
So am I alone in finding Human to be an ugly theme or do others agree?

ugliness lies in the eye of the beholder, personally I don't replace it immedieately, on occasions maybe.

To each his/her own...
Personally, I find orange painful to look at for extended periods, so I end up using Clearlooks with slate colors instead of bright blue.

nah it's not that bad. When it is compared to the default gnome theme or mac osx it isn't looking too bad, but it is still not good enough to keep unchanged.

I actually like it but I never keep it because I like to personalize.

I don't know. Maybe, after years of watching the blue in windows, I just can't stand the orange in ubuntu.Blame Gates:lolflag:

I´ve always been busy changing and configuring themes. Now I did a clean install of Jaunty and I totally like the human theme. I'm going to stick with it for while I think. It's just a relaxed theme.

darkroom is best in my opinion, I likle the white and light blue ones, but they look bad with the default desktop background, where darkroom does not. (I like the default desktop background.

Yeah, when I tested jaunty back in alpha, I had just heavily customised intrepid. So I booted jaunty to customise it, but I liked it too much :D.

I actually quite like the human theme, and also the old logon screen for ibex. I really dispise the new human logon screen though.

Warm Colors on a continuous Basis start to irritate my Eyes after a while. Subtle Blues, Greys & Blacks are my Preference, so I chuck the Brown/Orange Themes right off the Bat.

Ugly? ... no, not really compared to the alternatives for metacity.
Do I keep it as my theme? ... no also, compiz + a customised dust theme ftw ;)

I actually like the controls part of Human, but I'm not a fan of the window border, I use the darklooks border, the human controls, and the Gnome alternative icons, which is the regular GNOME icons with the folders open, the only difference from normal.

Moving to Recurring Discussions in 3... 2....
Anyway, my first impression upon seeing the theme back in 7.10 was not at all bad. In comparison to other distros it suffers somewhat, but it is at least unique. Most other distros use Gilouche as their metacity theme and while that's a very nice theme, they start to look the same after a while.
They need to take a leaf out of the OS X school of design; not aping it, but definitely following through on a few principles. Making it more compact and integrated-looking would be a step in the right direction.
I'm talking purely about the window borders here, I find the murrine GTK theme to be very good, as well as the wallpapers.
