I'll be honest, I've been back and forth from ubuntu countless times. But as you can tell I'm right back where I belong. Running Kubuntu with:

P4 3.0 ghz 800mhz FSB 512 L2
1 gig pc3200 ram
ATI Radeon X800 Pro (8681fps in glxgears. and yes, -Iacknowledgethatthistoolisnotabenchmark)

But I'll be honest, following Mlomker's guide on ATI drivers, I am hugely impressed with what I've seen. I run UT2004 at the max settings at 1152x864 and lose no framerate. Even in heavy firefights. Same with America's Army. I'll be honest, I am loving this forward progress made by ATI. It may not be leaps and bounds but I'll take casual skipping to get there if thats what it takes. Anyone else impressed by the drivers they're using? I was suprised that I had better scores that some nvidia cards. Minus the overclocked and water cooled ones ;-) I was just curious as to whether anyone else felt improvement with the new release.

9800 user here, and i'm not crazy impressed, as I think they should support more than one operating system to the fullest, or at least release what they can to the FOSS community (damn patents). However, it's better than nothing; personally, Nvidia leaves a foul taste, and i'm canadian, I'de prefer my cash go to the canadian economy rather than the american.

Our economy may not be at its high point but I used to own nvidia way before ubuntu and it seemed like they sold out to just about anyone willing to sell their gpu. There are like 9 different types of cards with the same specs. Maybe with a few more mhz. So I spent the extra cash and went the canadian route. And I was seriously impressed with ATI.......on windows. I don't feel like just dropping them cold cause everyone deserves a chance. And who knows, this linux thing could be catching on. I mean fast. So sooner or later they are gonna have to get creative to impress their future customers. And all their present customers will be right there waiting.

I used to run only Matrox cards (also Canadian, even though I'm American). Down the list of cards I've used in my main PC. Matrox Millenium 2, Matrox G200, Riva 128 (worse card I have ever used, and it was only temporary, since my G200 had died and I borrowed it from a friend), Matrox Marvel G400, Radeon Vivo (7200) (Because I needed something faster than the G400, only had it for a few months), Matrox Parhelia.

The Parhelia was the last Matrox card I have used, and probably will be the last. After waiting forever for a Linux driver, I finally broke down and purchased my first nVidia card. An eVGA 6800GT. I never regretted it because it runs everything I throw at it.

I run UT 2004 at 1600x1200 with everything maxed out and it runs at about an average of 45fps, and the lowest it ever drops is about 35.

Why did I go with nVidia instead of ATI? Simple, superior Linux drivers. I don't have loyalties to any graphics card company, I just try to go with whatever is the best for my needs. I was tired of not being able to use linux with the Parhelia, and only recently they've released somewhat decent drivers for that, and even then, they don't work with UT2k4 (though back when I still had that and three monitors Neverwinter Nights worked, and it was AWESOME on three screens.)

I do think ATI is increasing the stability and speed of their linux drivers, which is excellent. If they could pull it together, I may consider getting an ATI card next time I upgrade, though that probably won't be for a LONG time, since I'd have to get new motherboard, etc to go with PCI-E....

Anyhow, enough ranting :D

They're enouugh to get direct rendering to say Yes. but I still had to do some tweaking to my xorg.conf to get the correct max resolution.
