Just thought I'd drop in and say hello - so here goes nothing...

Hello there!

I've been into computers for some 6 years now, when I bought my first
over priced generic PC on Home Shopping Network which came graciously
installed with 98SE. A few years later I "thought" I would upgrade to XP.

Soon after installing XP, I was introduced to a local LUG, by the guy who
came out to install my new high speed connnection (RR).
I first thought this fellow was nuts wanting to introduce me to the
mud grips on his truck. I had no ideal what Linux was, let alone a blame
Linux Users Group (LUG).

So anyway, those people in the local LUG were a bit scarry at first. They kept
saying stuff like command line, rm -f, kernel, and so on. One even had pointed ears... Just kidding! ;)

Needless to say, I wondered what that cable guy was smoking!
I figured I'd best do a little research on the net... some of those
LUG members could have been wanted or something!

Alas, I found out that LUGS were all over the world. Discovered that I
didn't need to promise my first born child and the family jewels in order
to make my computer hardware work. I soon began TRYING to get my
head around *nix, trying out numerous distros.
I've got a long way to go still, but I really love what I've found in Ubuntu

Many thanks to Mark, the developers of ubuntu (and all those before including,
but not limited to Linus Torvalds), and the thousands of people that help
others on this forum. The ubuntu distro is a fantastic selling point as it is,
but the community support behind it, really puts it over the top for me.

Welcome! Have fun on these here forums!

One thing to keep in mind: If you have a problem with your computer or Ubuntu, chances are it's already been solved elsewhere on these forums. A forum search will probably turn up the answer to your question.

Keep at it! Once it starts making sense, you'll be amazed at how much you can do with/to your computer. For example, I've attached a screenshot of my desktop which I think can help to illustrate the flexibility of Linux.

Thanks for the welcome - Derek and landefor.

The search feature of vb is a great asset, I agree. I've spent several hours lurking the forums so far. Lot of good reading material here.
