Is the hal daemon in any way related to the madwifi hal thing? I'm doing my best getting rid of binary blobs (just switched from madwifi to ath5k), and was wondering if the hal daemon is in any way a binary.

Nope. It's an integral part of the GNOME/KDE/etc desktop environment. A quick Google would have turned up the following article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HAL_(software)

i did 'wiki hal', which brought me to the space odyssey one, but since it didnt have the (disambiguationm link, I thought it didn't have the article on it. And 'hardware access layer' didn't bring me any good results.
