hi, I don't have much knowledge regarding the intricacies of file systems - except the basic fact that OS X and Linux each have their own separate, different systems - but I am wondering if I created disk images (dmg) with Leopard's Disk Utility of each of my Ubuntu partitions (the ones created by guided partitioning), would that yield the same result as if I had created a disk image of my OS X partition, ie: an exact, and therefore bootable, duplicate of the partition suitable for a simple, easy restoration should I suffer a system meltdown? Does the file system really matter when cloning to a disk image?
Just a little more background: I would just like to add cloning my Linux partitions disk images in OS X Disk Utility as a matter of my regular course of back ups; I'm not necessarily adverse to a utilizing a similar Linux method but I figure this would be a more systematic routine for myself.
I use other software on a daily basis that automatically backs up only my data files - those of the word processing, spreadsheet, multimedia variety - to either an external drive (Time Machine in OS X) or into the cloud (Dropbox in Ubuntu). As I have had problems with restoring entire system realtime back ups of the Time Machine variety, I prefer to once a week clone my OS X partition as a disk image - I can live with losing a week's worth of changes to application installations, preferences, system files, etc. between back ups - always making two copies on separate disks in case one copy becomes corrupt or damaged (I've read sad sad stories of this happening to poor souls over in the Apple Forums).
Thanks in advance!
