Is it free of charge? If so, where can I find it?

I was able to download the quake 4 linux installer. I think that you might be able to download the quake 1 linux install from the id software site. You might wanna google "quake 1 linux installer" or something like that if you can't figure out what to do.
edit: you have to have the game cd for this I think

Don't bother using the idsoftware linux installers for quake 1 and 2 - they are too old to work properly on modern hardware. Instead, go to www.liflg.org and download the equake (quake 1 with better graphics) and quake2 installers. If you don't already know this site, it is indispensable for any linux gamer.
As for quake 3 and 4, yes, use the official installers. For quake3, make sure you get version 1.32b, otherwise you will have problems with your mouse.
In all cases, though, you need the windows cds/dvds to copy over the game content (unless you just want to play shareware or demo versions).
