Once i updated Ubuntu - the Sound is not loud enough to be heard on my laptop. Also, I cannot enable desktop effects.

Does anyone know how to fix these issues?

Have you installed any drivers for your graphics card? System==>Admin==>Hardware Drivers.

If not try installing one and see if that lets you enable effects.

As for the sound issue, when i upgraded to Intrepid my sound was too loud and found a fix that would probably work for you (it involved changing some Alsa settings) . I will have a dig around and see what i can get.

Is there a list of drivers when you select Hardware Drivers from the menu?

Otherwise, what is you graphics card?

The only drive listed in there is for the wireless card.

I have a Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller

According to the thread below your card may be "blacklisted". Have a check through though and see if its helpful.

all the appearance stuff worked with ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10, after i upgraded last night the appearance is now gone.

I just want it to be smooth again.
