Since compiz worked, I assumed my accelerated graphics were in order, however, Google Earth looks absolutely awful. It flickers and vanishes, only showing an empty gray box where the globe is meant to be.
glxgears output is: 3643 frames in 5.0 seconds = 728.401 FPS
Any ideas?
Thanks

I have a lot of problems with flickering when watching videos and using google earth. The only thing I have found that works is to turn off all visual effects.

I actually have no issues with videos, they look great!
Just google earth and I don't even want to imagine what a 3D game would like.

3D apps and compiz sometimes conflict. Try disabling the effects and see if things work ok then.

Excellent! That worked!
Pity both can't run at the same time. Something to do with ATI right?
Either way, I'm happy. I rarely play games or use Google Earth, so I can just switch off the effects for these blue moon times.

Not sure of the source of the problem... Probably something to do with trying to make a 3D accelerated window of a 3D accelerated video / viewport.
