After downloading and installing ubuntu 9.04 I was pleasantly surprised by the log in screen. It looked stuning. Then when I loged in, I was very disappointed. There was still the same old theme. A new wallpaper yes, but that was all that was obviously different.
Ubuntu is great and I have been using it happily for a number of years now but I have never got it to look really nice. It just looks visually not stunning. I find that ubuntu looks "old" I know that ubuntu is as good if not better than Mac and Windows, but It looks bad. And first impressions are important. If ubuntu is to become main stream then It has to look good by default. What things might I have over looked, or what do you guys think?

I do agree that the default themes aren't very appealing. However, when considering all the animations and layout. I think Ubuntu lands somewhere between OSX and Windows 7. OSX being the king of default (unchangeable) themes. It has the simplistic look that OSX has, and lacks many of the overly-ornate, and distracting windows visual effects.

If you dont like the theme, then change it ;)

Hessiess, of course, U can do this, but I agree Mike NZ; what is the reason to prevent Canonical to put a really nice theme into a distrib. Mike NZ, U R absolutely right, the login screen is already the top one, beating Windows' and MacOS' login screen, but then the desktop is nasty. Always the same colours, same big icons, same fonts...

I think this should be changed in the near future, if Ubuntu wants to become the mainstream linux-distribution.

It was known for some time that Jaunty Jackalope would have the same theme. New theme is expected in 9.10 as far as I know.
Jaunty Jackalope (what a terrible code name - rabbit with infection :-&) has some adjustments in theme I heard.

Best of all Ubuntu now includes nice dark yet functional themes like darklooks and others right in its repos. It makes it easier to install and you don't get messages like engines missing or icons required, it just works out of the box.

I liked the Theme, wish it was brown like "Darkroom".

I know they are going to Abandon Usplsah in the next release, still that does not give them the right to place such a crappy Usplash.

Calm down, guys. Canonical has just put together an art team (yes, guys who'll get payed for creating artwork) so we can expect significant changes very soon (in fact, in 9.10).

It's not about "infection", but about "speed". Search a forum a little, you'll get the point (For example, here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=915689&highlight=jaunty+jackalope)).

I've installed ubuntu for at least 5 different people and every single one of them actually commented on how good the default theme looked. I even kept it default for a few weeks. If your looking for something different I can recommend http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Sugar?content=101757 . Or you can search gnome-look.org and find a nice theme. It's really not that hard to do and that way you'll like it.

Take a look in System -> Preferences -> Appearance. There are some nice themes available by default. You can also get more via the repository.

Personally, I recommend you install community-themes and use Impression (which it provides); an absolutely gorgeous, completely distinctive theme :)

Someone should really archive these threads and just make variables $current_release and $current_release+1 (when referring to when there will be a new theme). And then just post the thread the day the latest version comes out.

+1 Not just these threads though. Also the "stupid name", "stupid number" and "windows roxors ubuntu suxks!!!11". :lolflag:

Sure, first impressions are important.

But if you don't like the theme, it takes a matter of minutes to change. I upgraded to jaunty just now, and this is what I achieved in around 2 minutes:

That's a really nice desktop. How did you do that?

Yes I know that it is easy to change the theme, I think the main point I am making is that a new user will know nothing about changing the way it looks and will take much longer than 2 minutes to get it looking anywhere nice. How did you do that? It looks good.

I find that Apple and Windows (no bias) have grown a bit long in the tooth with the glitzy 'jewel button / 3D' look which IMHO is on it's way out. Ubuntu goes for a modern, clean, flat look which is forward thinking IMHO. I am probably one of the most anal people I know when it comes to the look of a system, I have been desiging applications for decades and I spend more time on perfecting the GUI more than anything else (and man i am never satisfied) - Ubuntu is the first system in which the GUI appeals to my eye, it just 'works'.

I love the dark themes which come by default, this is the first time since I started playing with linux that I haven't immediately installed compiz fusion with emerald. Maybe in a few weeks, for now I'm just enjoying the dark themes :)
