Celeron 766
512Meg
Gigabyte gwmm7
Yamaha DS XG sound card
56K external modem
2 x 4gig ata66 drives

At this moment I am using Opera 8.51 to download my emails , type this and listening to BBC using realplayer. no stuttering and pages loading smoothly

Your specs are very similar to a PC that I have at home. I am running the regular Ubuntu. Granted, I do have a gigabit Nic installed and a gigabit network. I also only have 384 mb of RAM.
It runs well enough...
